he mentioned that he prefers to go either at the beginning or the end but not stay for the whole thing sometimes. he says dress is "casual" but "do your best". rick steves' germany & austria guide book (2007) recommends going to the standing room only. but that's just an aside.Īnyway, shortly after posting i picked up a new guide book and read about it. if you let people handle their own dress, sometimes you end up with smarter looking dress anyway (particularly in fancy restaurants). more over, i've been to many things where a certain dress code is required and many times it feels too contrived anyway. if i were truly uninterested in it, i probably wouldn't have posted a question here asking. i don't know why you equate not bringing a suit on an international trip when you already are limited in what you can bring to being "uninterested" in the event. first of all roley you sound like a real jerk. And then if you are NOT interested, you can save your money and use it for something that you will genuinely enjoy! That is not "stuffiness" - merely courtesy. I just wish tourists would either avoid the things in which they have no interest, or if they DO go, make an effort to follow the local customs. I don't mean this as a dig at dddane but just a general observation. I don't understand why people travel long distances and pay money (sometimes a lot of money) to attend events like the opera (or the Spanish Riding School) when they are clearly not at all interested in the performance and sometimes act bored and disruptive. I'm sorry if that sounds a bit snippy but I am tired of seeing places like the Staatsoper cheapened by hordes of uninterested tourists who make no effort to follow local customs or understand what it is they have paid to see or hear. If you just want to see the opera house, they offer tours in the afternoon which take you all over the house, and are very interesting and informative. If you really want to go to hear the music but can't bring fancy clothes on your trip, get a cheap seat or standing place up in the top gallery when non-smart clothes won't be conspicuous. If you don't want to dress up and go for the full experience, why waste money on a ticket at all? The opera is not a tourist sight and it is not mandatory!
